Honeybourne Line settles into new timetables

New timetables are in operation on normal service days, between
Toddington and the temporary southern terminus of the railway,
Gotherington.
For the Blue and Red timetables, departures from Toddington, the
railway's headquarters, are as advertised in the printed timetables
but no trains are travelling beyond Gotherington until further
notice.
Each trip from Toddington offers a run straight through to
Gotherington (via Winchcombe and the tunnel), return to Winchcombe;
back to Gotherington and then back to Toddington again via
Winchcombe. This offers a longer journey time than in the
normal timetable - and four trips through the tunnel!
There is a new Purple timetable which operates on the days when
an Elegant Excursions Sunday Luncheon train is scheduled.
This is on Sundays May 9th and 23rd; June
27th; July 4th and 25th; August
8th and 22nd and September 5th and
19th. However, for operational reasons and to
accommodate the Sunday Lunch train, each public service makes just
a single return trip to Gotherington.
As a result on these 'Purple' Sundays
only special fares will be
charged: Adult £9, Senior £8, Children £6, Family £27.
Normal 'Rover' fares (unlimited travel on day of issue)
still apply for Red and Blue timetables.
Please note, Sunday Luncheon trains will start and terminate at
Winchcombe station. If you have already booked for any of
these dates, you will be sent details of the new train times; if
not full details will be sent with your booking confirmation.
Departure times from Toddington of evening Elegant Excursions
dinner and evening Fish and Chip trains are not affected.
In most cases, because it is not possible for locomotives to
'run round' the train at Gotherington, all normal services will be
'top and tailed'. This means that a locomotive is attached to
the train at each end. In most cases this will be with a
heritage diesel at one end and a steam locomotive at the
other. The end on which the steam locomotive is attached
depends on which way the engine is pointing - for example, if the
engine is pointing chimney-first towards the south, it will be
attached at the south (Gotherington) end of the train. The
engine will haul the train to Gotherington, including the dead
weight of the diesel, and the diesel hauls the train back
again.
However, certain trains on the Red timetable have a steam
locomotive attached at both ends of the train (marked with an 'S'
on the timetable).
These new arrangements are in place because of the recent
landslip just beyond Gotherington station. This means that no
trains are calling at Cheltenham Racecourse.
More news on investigation of the landslip will follow
soon. However, Malcolm Temple, chairman of GWSR Plc, has
warned that there is no quick fix. "It's important that the
extent of the problem is properly determined and an effective
programme for remedial work put in place. We'll share that
information as soon as we can."
He adds: "Plans for our spectacular GWR175 event are going ahead
and we will have 12 locomotives available for traffic and an
intensive timetable, with all of the attractions you'll find on our
GWR175 pages. And as an added
incentive, trains will, for the first time, be running over Stanway
viaduct: the first step towards Broadway!"
There is free car parking at Toddington and Winchcombe
stations.
While the temporary timetables are in operation, Toddington and
Winchcombe booking offices are open as normal. Trains stop at
Gotherington, please note that if you wish to alight, travel in the
first two coaches of the train as the Halt has a short
platform. If you are joining the train here, please contact
the on-train staff who will advise you on obtaining a
ticket.
There is no car parking at Gotherington. The station is
accessed via a footpath off Granna Lane. The railway regrets
that station is unsuitable for those confined to a wheelchair as
there are steps at the Granna Lane end of footpath, which also has
a gravel surface.
