The Land Girls series - which was partly filmed at Toddington
station with GWR small 'prairie' 5542 performing a starring and
steamy role, is being broadcast from Monday evening at 5.15 on BBC
1. It then appears daily at the same time for the rest of the
week.
Set against the backdrop of war-weary Forties Britain, Land
Girls is set on the Hoxley Estate, as the girls balance their
working lives at the run-down Pasture Farm, and the opulent Hoxley
Manor. They arrive by train at Helmstead station (otherwise
known as Toddington).
Nancy, Joyce, Bea and Annie have all joined the Women's Land
Army for very different reasons, but they all have one common goal
- to serve their country and help win the war.
The drama follows the women as they try to live out their lives
in very challenging circumstances, with lots of laughter, love and
tears along the way.
You too can enjoy a 'Land Girls' day!
Locomotive 5542 is running on 12th and
13th September and on 20th September, the
railway is running a special Land Girls day. So don your tin
hat. Service uniform or 1940s garb; dig out your old Morris 8 car
and chug over to the GWR for a ride behind an engine that most
certainly will have delivered the real Land Girls (Women's' Land
Army) to their country destinations during the Second World
War!
