An imaginative programme that included the GWR's first-ever
'Shunterfest'; plenty of main-line diesel action with visiting
locomotives and the home fleet as well as the railway's second Bus
Rally all combined to make the latest Diesel Gala a resounding
success, despite dismal Saturday weather.
In all, 1,165 tickets were sold, a 14 per cent increase on last
year. Says Colin Dymock, head station master: "Diesels have a
special appeal for many and the number of people enjoying the GWR's
diesel events is growing. The addition of the bus rally,
which this year attracted over 40 buses in all shapes and sizes,
helps to enhance the Gala - diesels on road and rail seem to be a
natural combination, giving the event a broad appeal."
The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway has one of the finest
fleets of diesels in the UK. Of particular appeal this year
were a combination of two class 20s, visiting no. 20154 and
resident D8137 (its early British Railways number). Other
visiting locomotives included class 02 no. D2860 from the National
Railway Museum; long-term class 31 visitor no. 31162 and class 33
no. 33109 Captain Bill Smith RNR from the East Lancashire
Railway. The event also marked a welcome return to power of
the Freightliner-grey liveried Class 47 no. 47376 Freightliner
1995 following cylinder liner replacement.
