Water colour of Isambard Kingdom Brunel from Frederic Lea’s wonderful limited-edition montage GWR175 painting
Monday is a day not to be missed at GWR175 for the great man,
complete with top hat and (possibly false) cigar in teeth, will be
spending the day at Toddington. Quite what he will make of
the 'cart gauge' tracks, with no sign of his once-grand 7ft. gauge
main line, is anyone's guess. But surely he will be impressed
by the fact that his stations, his engineering, his bridges and
tunnels are used by today's High Speed trains.
And he will most certainly be delighted to see how we are
celebrating the 175th Anniversary of the Great Western
Railway. So why not pop along on Monday and meet the great
man himself?
Take a look too at the amazing display of nameplates, cabside
plates, station totems and much, much more in the main
marquee. Neil Booth of Railwayana Auctions has worked
tirelessly to persuade owners to bring along exhibits from their
private collections from all over the country - evocative names of
Kings, Castles, Stars, Manors and so much more - reminders of the
glorious Great Western past.
